Are you hosting some overnight visitors this holiday season? If so, use these tips to ensure their stay is welcoming and comfortable!

1. Vacuum and dust.

This can make a massive difference to those who are especially sensitive to dust and dander. When dusting, a microfiber cloth or wand will be the most effective tool, as opposed to a traditional feather duster. Make sure you don’t forget to dust these often-neglected nooks and crannies:

  • Furniture (including the undersides)
  • Ceiling corners
  • Baseboards, molding, and chair rails
  • Ceiling fans
  • Window treatments
  • Lampshades
  • Houseplants (real and artificial)
  • Air vents
2. Check your furnace’s air filter.

If your air filter gets overly dirty, some of the dust clogging that filter is going to make it into your HVAC system. From there, the system’s blower is going to blow that dusty air through your ductwork and out into different areas of your home. Not only does this make for sneezy indoor air quality, but it also undoes all of the work you just completed while dusting and vacuuming!

3. Provide blanket options.

Since it can be hard to tell if your guests will be “cold sleepers” or “hot sleepers,” provide them with layers of bedding that they can adjust to their comfort level. Along with freshly laundered sheets, make sure your guests have both a light blanket and a heavy blanket.

4. Provide freshly laundered towels and some holiday-scented soaps.

When you’re a guest, knowing which towels you’re allowed to use after showering can be confusing. Eliminate that confusion first thing by placing some clean, folded towels on your guests’ beds. To add some holiday charm, place a bar or bottle of holiday-scented soap (and maybe a candy cane or two) on top of the towels. If you’re particular about where your guests hang used towels, show them where to do so while you’re giving them a quick tour of your home.

5. Make sure the way to the bathroom is well-lit.

A trip to the bathroom should be a short, easy journey–not a perilous expedition through the dark. Equip your guest bathroom and hallways with some plug-in night lights so that no-stubbed toes occur on the way to the throne.

6. Keep some over-the-counter medications handy.

It always pays to keep a small supply of the basics on hand, including painkillers, antacids, upset stomach medication, and allergy pills.

7. Bring out the humidifier.

If you know your home’s air gets especially dry when you run your furnace, you may want to run a humidifier for your guests while they sleep. It will help prevent any nasal or throat discomfort and reduce allergy symptoms.

8. Leave instructions about the basics.

If your guests will be staying in your home while you’re not present, leave them instructions for things like the thermostat, TV remote, and WiFi password. After all, you want your guests to be comfortable and entertained even if you’re not able to be there.
