How do I know I need my ducts cleaned?

Is mold visible in your Furnace/Heat Pump/Air Conditioner or ducts?

  1. Insects, mice, or other rodents inside your ducts? Remove them and have your ducts cleaned.
  2. Is there a noticeable amount of dust collecting inside any of your ducts? Are you noticing dust coming out of your vents?
  3. Has it been more than 5 years since your ducts were cleaned?
  4. Are you having to dust more often?
  5. If family members are experiencing unusual or unexplained symptoms or illnesses that you think might be related to your home environment, you should discuss the situation with your doctor. EPA has published Indoor Air Quality: An Introduction for Health Professionals and The Inside Story: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality for guidance on identifying possible indoor air quality problems and ways to prevent or fix them. If it’s determined to be your heating and air conditioning system, then you need your ducts cleaned.

How often should I clean my ducts?

Frequency of cleaning depends on several factors, not the least of which is the preference of the home owner. Some of the things that may lead a home owner to consider more frequent cleaning include:

  1. Smokers in the household.
  2. Pets that shed high amounts of hair and dander.
  3. Water contamination or damage to the home or HVAC system.
  4. Residents with allergies or asthma who might benefit from a reduction in the amount of indoor air pollutants in the home’s HVAC system.
  5. After home renovations or remodeling.
  6. Prior to moving into a new home.
